What is Graphic Design? (week1)

This week I have selected the MINI brochure.

MINI cooper is known for its revolutionary automobile design. The key aspect of MINI design is to get the maximum out of the available small space. The brochure also is made with the same design grammar in mind. Unlike other car brochures which are at least letter size if not more, MINI sticks to a 4″ x 4″ accordion style brochure. It has a good form factor and is very handy, one can carry it in his/her shirt/pant pocket. I ordered one from their website www.miniUSA.com and it is shipped to you free of cost.

The style is minimalistic. The front page does not have any text but only the MINI wings and pictures of the 3 models that they sell. The back page has the contact & copyright information. Once you open the brochure you will find 20 more pages with information and images. The images are to the point and gives adequate visual support the the text. The font used is Helvetica. The text is emphasized  by either making it bold or capitalized or both. This also creates a nice textural quality to the large amount of text in the brochure.

What attracted me to this brochure is the fact that it is simple and it conveys the necessary information without being extraordinarily glamorous. The colors and images are also simple and will not jump at your eyes as you scrub through it. The human interaction is also subtle and shows the fun aspect of the car.
